You might expect such an arid and unforgiving place to be devoid of anything living, but here in Saguaro National Park in the western outskirts of Tucson, the towering saguaro cacti form dense forests that house myriad other plants and animals.</p><p>As Tucson and Phoenix sprawl outward, and agriculture expands along the Gila River, the diverse habitats of the Sonoran Desert continue to shrink. Parts of the region are protected within the Sonoran Desert National Monument, Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, and El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve, among other designated areas. The World Wildlife Foundation classifies the region as relatively stable/intact.</p>","photo":{"title":"The Sonoran Completed around 1350, Casa Grande was one of many settlements near the Gila river. While we know little about how the Great House was used, it is surrounded by several compounds that appear to have been residences. The mission is a gorgeous example of Spanish Colonial architecture, from its Baroque facade to the brightly painted wood carvings that decorate the transept and altar. Restorations after an earthquake in 1887, a lightning strike in 1939, and leaking walls in 1989 have allowed the church to continue serving the community to present day.</p>","photo":{"title":"Mission in the desert hills 30 miles north of Tucson, an other-worldly structure gleams in the sun. This is Biosphere 2, conceived as a sealed facility for exploring human-habitable ecological systems on a grand scale. A rainforest, savanna, ocean, marsh, and desert live under 6,500 glass panes.
